Whale sharks are the largest fish on Earth. The distribution of whale sharks indicates the presence of plankton and the overall health of our oceans. Demand for their meat, fins, and oil remains a threat to the species, particularly by unregulated fisheries. Major contemporary threats include fishing, accidental catches (bycatch), and boat strikes. WWF continues to work with different partners to learn more about the population, their habitat use, migratory pathways, and to ensure sustainable whale shark interaction practices.
